David Evenchick

SAA-approved Teacher Trainer

Dr. Evenchick has been a sanctioned cello teacher trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas since 1999, and in this capacity has trained hundreds of musicians internationally to teach the cello, utilizing the Suzuki philosophy. David draws upon decades of experience as a teacher and performer to provide insights into the sequential, technical, and musical understanding that are required to guide young musicians along the intricate and arduous path to become skilled musicians. He believes deeply in the commitment of all musicians to promote music making, a universal human experience, as a legacy to our cultural future.

Team work and organizational contribution are also an important part of Dr. Evenchick’s role in teaching. He has held faculty positions at the Preucil School of Music (Iowa City, Iowa), Grinnell (Iowa) College and the Suzuki String School of Guelph. In addition, he has sat on steering committees (Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra), the Suzuki Association of Ontario board, and is a co-coordinator of the Southwestern Ontario Suzuki Institute (Kitchener-Waterloo Ontario). He has been a cello coordinator and frequent presenter for the Suzuki Association of the Americas biannual conferences and is currently heading up the creation of an online teaching resource manual for the SAA. Currently David is the cello trainer for the first-ever long-term Suzuki pedagogy program in Canada, at Wilfrid Laurier University.

David describes his approach to cello pedagogy as “eclectic,” amalgamating the Suzuki Cello School® with other elements such as the cello materials of Rudolf Matz, a core love of children, a fascination with the learning process, and an openness to constant growth.
