CELLO POSITION (Groups, Part-time)

SUZUKI STRING SCHOOL OF GUELPH

POSITION: A part-time cello teacher with the Suzuki String School of Guelph (SSSG) in Guelph, Ontario to commence September 2024.

DUTIES: To teach Suzuki group classes and private lessons to cellists from beginner level to Suzuki book 4 repertoire. Teaching will include approximately 2 hours of weekly group lessons (17 weeks, Saturdays), as well as private lessons, 5-8 hours weekly (36 weeks). In addition, attendance at recitals, full school concerts, parent meetings, recruitment events, and faculty meetings is expected. We anticipate that this role can grow over time. Teacher training and mentoring available at the SSSG.

There is no guarantee of incoming students for ongoing part-time teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Qualifications for the position include: 

  • A Bachelor of Music degree (or equivalent). 

  • Related work experience.

  • A minimum proficiency in cello of Suzuki Book 10.

  • Suzuki training (up to Book 4) and experience is required. 

  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check dated within the last 6 months.

  • Ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with children, families, staff, and the general public.

  • Candidates must have a strong commitment to the Suzuki philosophy and a love of working with children. 

The following qualifications are desired but not required:

  • A Master’s degree.

  • Experience conducting.

DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1972, the Suzuki String School of Guelph currently has approximately160 violin, viola and cello students of all levels being taught by four full-time and three part-time faculty members. The faculty are employees of the School, receive training stipends, and full-time employees receive benefits. All lessons and groups are taught at the Guelph Youth Music Centre, a community centre dedicated to teaching the arts. The School is a non-profit registered charity and is run by a parent/teacher volunteer Board of Directors. Guelph, a university community of 150,000, has an abundance of musical activity and is within an hour of the larger cities of Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo.
